Located in Fairfax County Virginia, just 20 miles from Washington D.C., Centreville has a lot to offer with regard to housing, history, fun and entertainment. Legally, any inhabited areas of the US that are not ruled by their own regional governing body such as a local municipal corporation and which has its administration managed as part of a larger division are referred to as an unincorporated community and this includes Centreville in Fairfax County in the state of Virginia. This is a suburban community that is situated not far from Dulles, just a few miles south of its International Airport. The population at the time of the 2010 census was over seventy thousand which is made up of a variety of differing ethnic groups with around 25% Asian, 13% Hispanic or Latino citizens, 7% African Americans, 57% white with small minorities of other groups of around 4% plus 0.3% Native Americans and 0.1% Pacific Islanders.
The town itself was established in 1793 and its name is derived simply from the central location it occupied close to existing towns that were situated close by and these included Alexandria , Colchester, Dumfries, Middleburg, Georgetown , Warrenton, and Leesburg. The area from which this town grew its roots was known as Newgate from the 1760s onwards when William Carr Lane began operating the Newgate Tavern and a nearby convenience store in this vicinity. The tavern itself was named after a London prison, not least because Lane sold convicts as servants; however it was due to a petition submitted before the Virginia General Assembly from local landowners that led to the inception of Centreville. They had requested that a town be established on the turnpike road, which led from the Northwest Territory to Alexandria, and upon its acceptance it was situated just within the boundary of Loudoun County, not Fairfax where it eventually became part of the county it remains in today, back in 1798.
The town was developed during the federal period for mixed residential and commercial use with frame houses being built on the former and a few taverns, a school house, blacksmith shop and tanyards set up on the former. Each was allocated a 1/2 acre lot on which to build and Centreville went onto become an integral part of the Confederacy during the Civil War when its main street and church had to be regularly guarded by Union soldiers during the height of the fighting in 1862. Several major battles were also fought nearby and as a result the town also served as a supply depot for both sides during the conflict. It also became the site of the very first railroad ever constructed for military use as well as proving to be a valuable asset from a strategic point of view thanks to its close proximity to several major roads and its high ridge location which provided imperious views of the surrounding land. In more modern times, the town remained fairly small in size up until the latter part of the 20th century, when it saw a boom in growth particularly during the 1990s and early 2000s mainly as a result of the influx of technology companies who set up in the area.
